Home to some of the BEST cakes in Dallas, Cake Bar has been one of our longest standing partners in the catering business. In honor of our partnership, we sat down with Cake Bar’s founder, Tracy German, to discuss her inspiration and passion for baking.
What inspired you to start Cake Bar?
"Well, what inspired me is I knew as a child that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I didn’t know exactly what in, but I think my family upbringing of always baking cakes, and, you know, people coming over to eat desserts, I just liked how the people’s reaction was when they ate something sweet. So, it sent me towards, 'Okay, baking! That’s something I enjoyed.' So, I think that was one of the reasons, seeing people’s reactions when they ate sweets."
Who inspired you growing up?
"Growing up, my mom. My mom was the BEST scratch baker. She didn’t even use a recipe. She just kinda did a little bit of this and that. Now, you know, I use a recipe, but she inspired me because she baked several different flavors every holiday, she baked for people, so she was my biggest inspiration."
What were some challenges you faced when you first started?
"Well, when I first started, one of my biggest challenges was that we were in an itty bitty space, and we kept running out all the time. People would come in and say, “Hey! Do you have ___?” And we would say “We’re out.”, and it was like, aww man. So I think having a small space was one of our biggest challenges."
What advice can you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
"The advice I would give, is first, have a support network. Because you can’t be successful on your own. You know, you need support, you need partners, you need people you can lean on for advice. Secondly, I would say, get with someone who is successful in the area that you want to go in, and see if they’ll mentor you. And the last piece of advice I would give is, make sure you get your rest, because it’s going to be long hours and a lot of work."
Do you have a favorite cake?
"Well, one of my favorite cakes is the red velvet. It’s because it reminds me of my mom. That was the one she was known for, that was the one she made from scratch, so when I do the red velvet, it reminds me of my mom."
What are your goals for the future of Cake Bar?
"My goal is to take Cake Bar nationwide— To take it into other cities. One of our goals is to actually have 21 different flavors, because each of our cakes are baked with a different recipe. So, it’s not like the same cake duplicated, so my goal is to really have 21 flavors, and to be nationwide."
Anything exciting coming up in the near future?
"Well, we are in the vending machine business, and so we’re hoping to spread more vending machines across DFW and surrounding areas."
Tracy has always known cakes were her calling. Now she’s baking them up with love- enough for everyone in Dallas. Who wants a slice?
